Bocce Court FAQ

Frequently

Asked

Questions

1. Do I need oyster shell flour or a top coat?

No. Our Oyster Shell Mix is a premium, single-layer solution specifically engineered to perform without needing a separate, tricky top dressing layer (like fine oyster flour or shell dust). This makes installation faster and easier.

Crushed oyster shell is the “gold standard” for bocce because of re-calcification—a process where the shells fuse over time to create a rock-hard, yet porous, surface.

Our unique, consistent blend compacts beautifully, achieves superior drainage, and creates a smooth, fast-playing surface that maintains its integrity over time. Perfect for DIY and residential courts.

2. How deep should the oyster shell layer be?

For most residential and recreational bocce ball courts, a compacted depth of 3 to 4 inches of SnowPlus Oyster Shell Mix is ideal.

  • 3 inches: Great for casual play, smaller courts, or courts with a solid, existing base layer (like packed crushed stone).

  • 4 inches: Recommended for high-use areas, longer courts, or for building a full-size regulation court (90′ x 13′) to ensure maximum stability and longevity.

  • A popular recipe: A base layer of Decomposed Granite (DG) or 3/4″ minus rock, topped with 2 inches of Crushed Oyster Shell.

  • Maintenance Tips: Mention that a quick raking and a light misting of water are all it takes to keep the court “tournament ready.”

3. What’s the difference between oyster shell mix, shell hash, and decomposed granite?

The primary difference lies in consistency and performance. Our mix is designed for a premium, compact playing surface.

4. How much material do I need for a backyard court?

The material needed depends on your court’s dimensions and desired depth. You can estimate by calculating your court’s area (Length x Width) and multiplying it by the depth (e.g., $0.25 \text{ ft}$ for 3 inches).

Quick Reference Estimates (at 3-inch depth):

  • Small/Residential (60′ x 10′): cubic yards

  • Common Backyard (76′ x 10′): 7 cubic yards

  • Official Regulation (90′ x 13′): 11 cubic yards

⚡ Instant Calculation: Don’t guess! Tell us your dimensions (length x width) and we will calculate your exact yardage needed!

6. Do I need a subsurface/base layer under the oyster shell?

Depends on your starting surface and quality of court, we recommend a compacted base layer (typically 3-6 inches of crushed, angular stone like granite or limestone) to ensure proper drainage and stability. The oyster shell mix is the playing surface, and the stone base is the structural foundation required for a long-lasting court.

7. How do I maintain an oyster shell bocce court?

Maintenance is simple! You primarily need to keep the surface level by lightly raking it after play and before rolling. An occasional light watering helps the surface reset and compact. We offer a full maintenance guide with every purchase.
